THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/cambodia

28/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - Olivier Dupuis, Lista Bonino MEP, suggested to the Council of the EU that it launch a joint initiative with the United States, Japan and Australia to contribute to a solution to the crisis Cambodia is experiencing. The MEP spoke out about the assassination of the union leader Chea Vichea "in broad daylight" on 22 January in a street in Phnom Penh. Chea Vichea, 36, was the president of the Free Trade Union of Workers, which he founded in 1996 together with opposition leader Sam Rainsy, said Mr Dupuis. He recalled that last July, Chea Vichea received death threats on his mobile telephone, but the police, having identified the sender of the message, told him that it was somebody very powerful and as the police could not protect him, advised him to leave the country. How many members of the opposition must be assassinated before Europe "grasps the criminal nature of the regime of Hun Sen?", asked Mr Dupuis.
