Brussels, 28/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Union could attack, in Geneva, the so-called "zeroing" method used by the Untied States for calculating anti-dumping duties imposed on imports of foreign products. "We will probably be forced to follow a dispute settlement procedure at the World Trade Organisation", Commissioner Pascal Lamy said on Tuesday when speaking before the European Parliament's Committee on trade. "Several Member States of the Union have called for this complaint to be filed", the spokesperson for Mr Lamy said. "We are preparing the dossier and will take the final decision in the next few days". According to Europeans, the method in question tends to step up antidumping duties against European companies mainly in the steel sector. The Commission has tried to settle the matter in a friendly way, informally and then formally, by filing in June 2003 a request for consultation in Geneva, it is recalled in Brussels.
