The pan-European active business association, GrowthPlus, has published an annual list of 500 expanding businesses throughout Europe in all industrial sectors. The classification includes not only the members of the EU, but also Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. The 2002 edition shows that these businesses have increased the number of jobs they provide almost threefold and have created over 277,000 employment positions throughout Europe over the last five years. They are now active in all sectors of activity and not only the technological sectors which hitherto showed impressive growth rates. The country with the largest number of growth companies is by far Germany (107 companies present) followed by the United Kingdom (65). Italy (with 43 businesses), France (42), Spain (34) and Austria (37) are the least dynamic. We would note, moreover, the good results shown by Belgium with 19 Belgian firms present in the classification, two of them ranking fourth and fifth.
