THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/international criminal court

07/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - The decision announced by the United States to withdraw their signature from the Statute of the International Criminal Court has been strongly criticised by the Greens/EFA group at the European Parliament. Co-President Monica Frassoni criticised "this new demonstration of unilateralism" as being "in contradiction with the proclaimed priority given to the fight against terrorism… But Bush is trying in vain to turn the clock back. Even without the United States' support the International Criminal Court will enter into force in 1 July. The cases of Milosevic, Pinochet and the Tribunal on genocide in Rwanda are evidence that international justice… is slowly coming forward. The door to the USA to rejoin the international community remains wide open" concluded the MEP. The movement "Non c'e pace senza giustizia" expressed similar views, surprised that the decision was taken the day after the 60 ratifications required for the Court to come into force, but expressing confidence that the US would change its views.
