Brussels, 07/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the Open Day at the European institutions on 4 May, the Belgian Union des Fédéralistes Européens (chaired by Fernand Herman) carried out a survey on Europe of visitors to the European Parliament in Brussels which revealed that 87% of the 120 people poled wanted a European Constitution and the transfer of foreign and defence policy to European level. Without any claims to be scientific, the UEF aimed to take the temperature of public opinion and concluded that 93% of those polled supported qualified majority decision-making at the Council; 77% wanted the EP to have greater powers; and 42% want the European Commission to become the government of Europe. In order of importance, the priority areas for those polled were social well-being, enlargement, peace and human rights, education and culture, deepening European integration and security (only in sixth place). The outcome of the poll was discussed at a round table chaired by Fernand Herman with Bruno Bossière, UEF Secretary General and Giuseppe Ciavarini Azzi, special advisor at the European Commission.
