08/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, CDU MEP Peter Liese says that if we won't do anything about it, there will be millions of cloned babies in a few years time, commenting on news that a women who has taken part in Italian doctor Severino Antinori's controversial human cloning project is eight months pregnant. Peter Liese is himself a doctor. He has expressed doubts about whether Antinori already masters the technique for cloning babies, but slams his behaviour as irresponsible. He also condemns scientists who criticise Antinori's research on purely technical grounds (by commenting that since experiments on animals had not yet led to satisfactory results, it was not possible to clone babies "at present"), stressing that the cloning of human beings had to be rejected on ethical grounds, whether or not it was technically possible.
