18/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament Greens/EFA group organised a public hearing on 11 December in Strasbourg on the subject of "From Genoa to Laeken: impact and implications". British journalist Marc Covell took part and presented the European Parliament with a petition on the violence that took place during the G8 summit in Genoa last July. During a press conference, British Green, Jean Lambert, pointed out that Article 6 of the Treaty is based on respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law and noted that during demonstrations, anti-globalisation protesters in Genoa experienced an "explosion of police violence" , which posed not only the problem of police training but also that of "strategy control" of demonstrations of this kind. Ms Lambert also asserted that this issue also raised the question of breaches of the Schengen agreement, as people had been blocked "en masse" and individually at the borders.
