18/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - Adopting the report on Tuesday by Arlindo Cunha (EPP-ED, Portugal), the European Parliament endorsed the new Fisheries Protocol between the EU and Guinea-Bissau. The Protocol runs from 16/06/2001 to 15/06/2006 for trawling, viz. a total of 12,400 gross registered tonnes (GRT) broken down into 9600 GRT for prawn fishing and 2800 GRT for cephalopods and fish. The tuna seiner quotas have been increased (over the previous protocol) from 37 to 40 ships (+8%), while longliner and pole and line vessel quotas have been cut by 30% from 52 to 36 ships. In return the Community will pay EUR 51 million over the 5 years.
