18/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - Last week, the Council of the EU adopted three decisions on macrofinancial aid for the Balkans: 1) Bosnia-Herzegovina. In order to provide the final EUR 15 million of the EUR 40 million aid decided in May 1999, the Council has postponed the deadline which had been set for the end of 2000; 2) Macedonia. The Council postponed until 31 December 2003 the deadline for granting EUR 48 million in aid as decided in 1999; 3) Yugoslavia. The Council has increased the "aid" part of a EUR 330 million macrofinancial aid package endorsed in July 2001 from EUR 75 to 120 million. The postponement for the first two countries is due to the difficult political situation causing problems in spending the aid, while for Yugoslavia, the Commission explains that it has increased the pure "aid" section due to the worse than expected state of the economy.
