THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/france

Strasbourg, 05/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - Europe is the first pillar of the project by Francis Bayrou, French member of the EPP-ED Group at the European Parliament and UDF Presidency, for his candidature to the presidential elections of 2002 in France. "I have placed Europe at the top of the list, because every model must have its tool. If there is no power to defend it, the model is no more than a pretty song that evaporates when faced with reality", he declared last weekend at his party's summer university. "If we have made Europe it is not only for trade between us but for our model of civilisation based on moral and cultural values and for respect of diversity, which should be respected and defended in the future against all the forces of the planet. That is why the Europe we want (…) must be a political force", a force that Mr Bayrou would like to see with a Constitution, a President and elected leaders. On the other hand, François Bayrou considers the ideas put forward by Jacques Chirac "change depending how the wind of the polls blows, anti-European one day, pro-European the next".
