Debate focuses on the violence at Genoa

Strasbourg, 05/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday afternoon, the EP held a debate on the G8 Summit in Genoa, focussing principally on the violence that characterised the summit. The GUE/NGL and Greens/EFA groups, wanted a commission of enquiry to be set up, but know that they are in the minority over this. Mr Wurtz said that they would not give up. EUROPE will be returning to this issue.

The above-mentioned groups organised a meeting with the movements which were present in Genoa. Vittorio Agnoletto, President of Genoa Social Forum, called on the EU to ask how it was possible that the coordination of the Ministers of the Interior had allowed violent groups to be able to come to Genoa while peaceful citizens had been prevented from coming. Christophe Aguiton of Attac France expressed concern that France had 'set the example, so to speak' (at the Nice Summit, Ed) and called for Europe to take a stand so that the same did not occur in Belgium or at a later date in Spain.
