THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cyprus/turkey

05/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - As we pointed out earlier (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.9), the Turkish Foreign Minister issued a declaration reproaching the EP rapporteur on accession by Cyprus, Jacques Poos, for his "well-known one-sided attitude" towards the Cyprus issue. Mr Poos, as the Foreign Minister of Luxembourg at the EU Luxembourg Summit in December 1997, had "skilfully undertaken his functions of harming EU-Turkish relations and successfully carried out his task", said the Minister. He added that Mr Poos says in his report that "if Turkey annexes Northern Cyprus, she will have to forget about the EU membership", although Turkey's "expectation on Cyprus is a confederation to be formed with the agreement of both parties". Turkey "does not and will not construe any linkage between her EU membership and the Cyprus issue. There is no change in Turkey's stand in this respect", notes the declaration.
