Gaza, 05/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, CFSP High Representative, currently on a visit to the Middle East (see yesterday's edition of Europe pages 6 and September 3 and 4 page 3), expressed his hope, after Tuesday's meetings between Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres, would take place between the President of the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli Minister for Foreign Affairs "very soon". He also added that this prospect was now closer. In an interview published on Wednesday in El Pais, Javier Solana said that holding the meeting in Cernobbio (on Lake Como) "was one possibility but not the only one". Above all, he signalled that preparations for the meeting were continuing and that work was now being carried out on the substance. He said that they were working on the Agenda and the content of the next meeting between Arafat and Peres and also on the fact that the meeting needed to have continuity and move in the direction of a renewal of dialogue. There were three main themes, in substance, he said: the security of Israelis and Palestinians, improving the Palestinians living conditions and measures that can help build the trust of the two sides.
