15/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - As foreseen (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.15), the European Commission adopted, on Tuesday in Strasbourg, a Communication which proposes an updating of the framework for relations with China. It aims to do this by enhancing the dialogue over political and humanitarian aspects and by widening the cooperation to new fields. The favoured actions aiming to provide greater coherence and efficiency to the European policy towards China without backtracking over the strategic guidelines defined in 1998, are presented in the shadow of the Sino-European Summit in Brussels, next September, less than a week before the departure of Chris Patten for Beijing. The Commissioner for External Relations will take part, from 21 to 24 May, in bilateral ministerial meeting, in the framework of the European Troika, then on 24 and 25 May, in the "foreign affairs" session of the Euro-Asian meeting forum
