10/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - Gerhard Hager MEP member of the FPO, has written to European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine and the presidents of the political groups asking them to place the Schleicher Report on the statute and financing of European political parties, that is to be discussed in plenary next week, somewhere on the agenda worthy of its importance, whereas, as we stand, it is placed as last topic on Wednesday's agenda (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.14). According to him, given "the major problems" this report deals with (the lack of a legal basis and the possibility for cross financing of national parties), discussion of the report in night session, that is known for its low attendance, could give the impression that "we are trying to prevent the report from receiving the publicity it deserves".
