THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/charter of fundamental rights

14/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Parliament is to vote on the report by Messrs. Duff and Voggenhuber relating to the future Charter of Fundamental Rights (see EUROPE of 2 March, p.3). Tuesday afternoon, during the debate, the Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Giorgio Napolitano (Democratici di Sinistra) declared: "In Cologne, governments showed courage. They should not repent that. On the contrary they should draw the logical consequences and enshrine the Charter in the Treaty". On behalf of the Council, Francisco Seixas da Costa placed emphasis on the importance of the Charter both in the context of enlargement and for the continuation of the construction of political Europe. Referring to the "added value" that the new instrument should provide, he added that the Charter represented an opportunity for the IGC to reach a balanced result.
