14/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - Commission launches public consultation into port reception facilities. On Wednesday 13 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation on revising the directive on port reception facilities for ship waste and cargo residues (directive 2000/59/EC). In a report presented at the end of March 2016, the Commission effectively targeted the many shortcomings in the implementation of the above-mentioned directive (particularly with regard to the disposing of rubbish, waste water capacity problems and the handling of residues from cleaning systems for gas pipes). It should be pointed out that the directive is seeking to reduce waste and residues generated by ships at sea, particularly illegal dumping. The consultation will run for 11 weeks and closes on 16 October. (PH)
