04/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU stands beside Iraq in battle against Daesh. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stated on Sunday 2 July that the EU stands alongside the Iraqi government as it battles the self-styled Islamic State (or Daesh). “The military victory marked by the Iraqi security forces, and notably the recent liberation of the city of Falluja, is an important step in the fight against Daesh”, said Mogherini in a press release. “We will continue supporting Iraq in particular in its efforts to quickly stabilise areas liberated from Daesh”, she went on to say. Her statement comes after a terrorist attack, responsibility for which was claimed by Daesh, when a lorry packed with explosives was detonated in a busy shopping street in Baghdad on Saturday 2 July, killing at least 213 people, including many children, and injuring 200 more. Iraq began three days of national mourning on 4 July after this, the deadliest attack for a year. (CG)
