20/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU calls for transparency in legal proceedings following arrest of Nabeel Rajab. On Thursday 16 June, a spokesperson for the European External Action Service emphasised that the arrest on Monday 13 June of the Bahraini activist, Nabeel Rajab was "a matter of deep concern for the EU". The spokesperson added that the EU expected "that a fair and transparent judicial process will be expedited". The spokesperson also explained that the regime's freeze of all activities and assets of the opposition political society, Al-Wefaq on 14 June "was another worrying sign of the shrinking of the political space". The EEAS spokesperson pointed out that "Freedom of expression is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of democratic societies. Dialogue and reconciliation between the authorities and the opposition are the only long-standing solution to the tensions in Bahrain". (CG)
