30/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - 4,555 Syrian refugees resettled in EU. European Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said at a high-level conference on Syrian refugees in Geneva on Wednesday 30 March that 11 EU member states and associated countries had resettled 4,555 people from camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, out of the 22,504 places promised in July 2015. The United Nations pointed out that 4.8 million Syrians had fled their country since March 2011 and that 6.6 million people had been internally displaced. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi called on all countries to resettle more Syrians and pledged to have 10% of the 4.8 million resettled by 2018. Only 179,000 places have thus far been made available. (SP)
