EU hails arrival of Libyan Presidency Council in Tripoli

Brussels, 30/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 30 March EU, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini welcomed the arrival by sea earlier in the day of Fayez al-Sarraj, President of the Presidential Council and Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord, and members of his cabinet in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. The city is in the hold of militia which have tried all means to prevent the Presidential Council from reaching the capital.

The arrival of the Presidential Council in Tripoli “represents a unique opportunity for Libyans from all factions to reunite and reconcile on the basis of the Libyan Political Agreement”, states Mogherini in a press release. She says that this “is an important step for Libya's democratic transition and for the implementation of the Libyan Political Agreement, in line with the wishes of the Libyan people”. The high representative stressed that it was “crucial” for Libyan institutions, actors and stakeholders to show support and work with the Presidency Council and the Government National Accord.

The EU and its member states reiterate their “full commitment to support Libya and to accompany the full implementation of the political agreement”, working in close partnership with the Government of National Accord, Mogherini said. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
