30/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - End of international health emergency. The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced on Tuesday 29 March the ending of the public health emergency of international concern following the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The good news comes two and half months after the end of the virus transmission in the region was announced. The European Union welcomed this announcement in January, making clear nonetheless that EU aid to the countries affected would continue (see EUROPE 11468). The EU has learned lessons from the crisis and has set up the European Medical Corps so that its response will be more effective in the event of a health emergency if, for example, there should be fresh outbreaks of Ebola or of any other potentially fatal virus (see EUROPE 11490).
