30/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU hails transfer of power in Burma/Myanmar. On Wednesday 30 March, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini hailed the “peaceful transfer of power in Myanmar to a democratically elected Government” after the elections of November 2015. She said that this “marks a new important step in the consolidation of the country's remarkable transition”. “While significant progress was made in the past few years, many challenges remain for Myanmar to become an inclusive, pluralistic and peaceful democracy”, Mogherini nonetheless stated. Congratulating the new president, U Htin Kyaw, and the new government, the high representative said she looked forward to working with the new government and to supporting the Myanmar people along their path to democracy and socio-economic development for all.
