27/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - Séralini study on long-term effects on farm animals. A study by French professor Gilles Eric Séralini into the effects on farm animals of long-term ingestion of GMOs was presented in the European Parliament on Tuesday 26 January by the professor himself and French MEPs Michèle Rivasi and José Bové (Greens/EFA). The study considers the effect on 70 cows of feeding on Bt 176 maize over an observation period of five years. The results of blood and urine samples were published. Rivasi pointed out that studies carried out by the industry only cover two-year periods. She said that this study argues that the precautionary principle should apply throughout Europe. Bové urged EFSA to put in place a long-term assessment protocol for GMOs as was called for by a number of independent researchers in 2012. Professor Séralini is the author of a previous study on the long-term effects of NK 603 maize on rats. This study caused controversy because of the methodology used (see EUROPE 10740 and 10722). (AN)
