17/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU increases its emergency aid by €4 million. On Friday 17 July, the European Commission decided to allocate a further €4 million in humanitarian aid to vulnerable people in Sudan. The massive influx of over 190,000 refugees from neighbouring South Sudan since the outbreak of conflict in December was behind the Commission's decision. The funding, taken from the budget of the Commission's humanitarian aid and civil protection department (ECHO), will finance the supply of food, water, access to basic sanitation facilities and health care. Out of the 6.6 million people (one in five) requiring aid, 4.4 million need lifesaving aid. Sudan, which is prey to violence and insecurity, has 4 million displaced people. Since 2011, the EU's humanitarian aid effort for this country has been over €200 million. (AN)
