EU wants to bring perpetrators of flight MH17 to justice

Brussels, 17/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has reiterated her resolve for those responsible for the crash of flight MH17 to held accountable using a “binding and credible” prosecution mechanism.

“Those directly or indirectly responsible for the downing of MH17 must be held accountable and brought to justice, in accordance with UNSC resolution 2166. In this respect, the EU and its member states fully support the ongoing efforts to establish a binding and credible prosecution mechanism”, Mogherini said on Friday 17 July - the one year anniversary of the attack causing the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. Mogherini also described the act that was perpetrated as a “serious violation of international peace and security”.

Nearly 300 people, including many Dutch nationals and several Belgians, lost their lives in the crash - which Russia and Ukraine mutually accuse each other of causing.

At the European Parliament, the ALDE Group has written a letter supporting the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and Ukraine in their call for “an international criminal court” to be set up to bring those responsible for the crash of flight MH17 to justice. (Mathieu Bion)
