Unemployment will continue to rise, ILO predicts. - The latest annual report of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is alarming: unemployment is set to continue to rise in the years to come, as the global economy has entered a new period of sluggish growth combined with an increase in inequality and social unrest. In 2019, more than 212 million people will be out of work, compared to 201 million at the moment. Whilst the situation has improved in the United States and Japan, it remains difficult in Europe. The situation has worsened in sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab world, certain regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. Inequalities in income, the principal cause of the worsening employment situation, will continue to increase, the ILO predicts, with the wealthiest 10% earning between 30 and 40% of total revenue whilst the poorest 10% will earn between 2% and 7% of total income. There is just one bit of good news: the number of poor workers and workers in vulnerable jobs has fallen everywhere. (IL)
