EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) iraq

25/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - Ashton-Zebari meeting. Underlining the EU's increasing concern about the escalation in violence in Iraq and the now daily attacks, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton committed, on 24 September, to helping the authorities in their efforts to fight against the threat of terrorism. During her meeting with Iraq's Minister for Foreign Affairs Hoshyar Zebari, Ashton also reiterated “the EU's determination to develop a lasting and mutually beneficial relationship with Iraq”, based on the partnership and cooperation agreement, the implementation of which “is now making concrete progress”. Ashton and Zebari also agreed to continue working together to find “a satisfactory solution” to the resettlement of the residents of Camp Ashraf, Iranians from the People's Mujahedin (see EUROPE 10920). They also discussed the diplomatic efforts on the Syrian crisis. (CG/transl.fl)
