Boom in digital broadcasts of US dailies. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) survey, the digital broadcast segment for US dailies is growing significantly. Over a six-month period from April to September, electronic sales out of total sales carried out by the US dailies across the board, reached 15.3% as opposed to 9.8% over the same period the previous year. This figure will gradually enable them to make up for the -10% to -20% falls they experienced two or three years ago. This recovery has, however, been characterised by the disappearance of several newspapers. In 2005, the ABC identified 800 daily newspapers as opposed to the current 613. With daily digital broadcasts of 896,352 out of total sales of 1,613 million copies (a 55.5% segment) the New York Times is the number one leader in e-reading, ahead of the US daily the Wall Street Journal (digital broadcast estimated at 794,594 out of a total of 2,294 million copies) and controlling 34.6% of the market. The percentage, however, remains modest for USA Today (5%) and to a lesser extent, the Los Angeles Times (23.6%) and the New York Daily News (27.3%). (IL/transl.fl)
