12/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - Towards a President supporting government reforms. After the surprises of the first round of elections in Slovenia, the former Prime Minister Borut Pahor, a proponent of austerity reforms, seems set to become the president of this small member of the eurozone in the grip of a severe recession. Socialist Borut Pahor, 49, is back from the wilderness, winning 40% of the votes in the first round of the presidential elections on Sunday. He far outstripped the current head of state and opinion poll favourite, Danilo Türk - independent, but supported by the main centre-left opposition party Slovenia Positive - who won just 35.84% of the votes. The two men will have to share the spoils after the second round on 2 December. The position of head of state is largely an honorary position in Slovenia. The candidate of the Conservative party in power, Milan Zver, received some 24.16% of the votes. (LC/transl.fl)
