22/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - A number of European political figures including the former Czech and Lithuanian presidents, Vaclav Havel and Vytautas Landsbergis, former Estonian Prime Minister, Mart Laar and the intellectuals, Bernard-Henri Lévy and André Glucksmann made an appeal to the EU on Tuesday to show a tougher line with Russian in defence of Georgia's territorial integrity. A text published in several newspapers (Le Monde, The Guardian, Die Welt, Corriere della Sera) affirmed that the EU should define, “a more pro-active strategy to help Georgia”. The signatories of the text also exhort the EU to do more to help Tbilisi, “regain its territorial integrity peacefully and obtain the withdrawal of Russian forces illegally occupying its territory”. Signatories also express fear that “27 years after emancipation of half of our continent, a new wall is being built in Europe: on the sovereign territory of Georgia”. (H.B./trans/rh)
