22/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 21 September, at the request of Germany, EU immigration ministers discussed European asylum legislation, and, in particular, two proposals the European Commission intends to bring forward on 20 October (see EUROPE 9980). German Home Affairs Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said the EU had to look at how the mechanisms in place were working before moving on. The German Constitutional Court recently decided to halt the removal of an Iraqi asylum seeker to Greece, where his first asylum request had been rejected. The Court's decision was taken on the grounds that asylum seekers were not properly treated by Greece, even though reception of asylum seekers and how their requests are handled are governed by European legislation. During the debate, a number of countries (Austria and the UK) supported Germany. Southern European countries, however, want to forge ahead. (B.C./transl.rt)
