Brussels, 25/08/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is to make new proposals on asylum policy in September, Swedish Immigration Minister Tobias Billström said on Monday 24 August. As reported by AFP, Billström said the resettlement project must be presented in September by Commission Vice-President Jacques Barrot. The joint EU resettlement programme, to be presented on 2 September in the form of a communication, aims at the transfer of refugees currently settled in third countries towards EU member states. Possible application of these proposals will be on a voluntary basis by member states, the minister said. The measure must not be confused with the pilot projects that the Commission plans to launch in October to show solidarity and concerning the resettlement of those benefiting from international protection in Malta towards other European countries (EUROPE 9961). Also regarding asylum, the Commission intends to present two legislative proposals in early October. These will amend the 2005 directives on minimum standards for the qualification and status of third country nationals or stateless persons as refugees or as persons who otherwise need international protection. On the subject of immigration policy, Billström said he expected the Commission to make proposals in September. On 15 September, the Commission is due to present two directives, one on the conditions of entry and residence of seasonal workers and the other on procedures regulating the entry into, and the temporary stay and residence of Intra-Corporate Transferees (ICT).
