Brussels, 15/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - The British government of Gordon Brown would support an application by Tony Blair for the position of stable President of the European Council, as provided for by the Treaty of Lisbon, British Minister for Europe Glenys Kinnock, has announced. Mr Blair, the former prime minister and current special envoy of the Quartet for the Middle East, has not yet announced his intention to stand (sources close to him have stated that there is no point discussing the issue until the Treaty of Lisbon has been ratified by all member states), but he has already been mentioned as a possible candidate, by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, amongst others. Mrs Kinnock, a former member of the European Parliament, said that Mr Blair had the experience, political stature and force of personality needed to carry out this role. The European Council will elect its stable president by qualified majority for two and a half years, renewable once. (H.B./tranls.fl)
