Brussels, 07/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - US$23 billion annually by 2012 - according to the development NGO, ActionAid, that is the amount G8 leaders in L'Aquila must find for investment in order to attain the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to reduce hunger in the world by half by 2015.
“The G8 is failing over one billion hungry people. In 2008, they made commitments to tackle the food crisis but since last year the number of hungry has risen by 100 million. Poor people cannot eat promises. This year the G8 must do more”, said Angela Wuye, from ActionAid Kenya. According to ActionAid research, France currently spends the most to combat hunger (with US$0.66 billion), followed by the United Kingdom (0.60), Germany, Japan, Canada, and the United States. Italy - which is to host the G8 - comes in last place, which is an embarrassing situation for Silvio Berlusconi, the NGO says. (A.N./transl.jl)
