Brussels, 25/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, has called on the European Commission to hold a meeting on illegal immigration between Italy, Malta, Libya, the HCR and other partners involved to work towards the development of a common strategy aimed at a satisfactory response to illegal migration across the Mediterranean. In a letter sent to Commission Vice-President Jacques Barrot on 19 May, Guterres states he is aware of the pressure that illegal immigration places on Italy and on other EU member states. At the same time, the HCR considers fundamental principles are at stake and that these principles ought to guide the response to such movements. (B.C./transl.jl)
