14/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - The French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Bruno Le Maire affirmed that the EU should halt enlargement “after the Balkans” in order to focus on its political deepening. On Tuesday, Mr Le Maire informed France Inter that, “after the Balkans, it will be necessary to halt enlargement and focus on the strengthening of the European institutions. The two things are not compatible”. Le Maire also reiterated France's opposition to Turkish accession. According to a CSA poll conducted on 14 April, 50% of French people say they are opposed to Turkey joining, as opposed to 35% who say they support it and 15% who did not give an opinion.
