Brussels, 14/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner has welcomed the decision of the Moldovan Central Electoral Commission which, on Sunday 12 April, ordered votes in the legislative elections of 5 April to be recounted. The Communist Party won the election but the results were challenged by the opposition in the streets of Chiºinau last week (see EUROPE 9879). The recount will take place on Wednesday 15 April. Ferrero-Waldner called on all parties to remain calm and to engage in dialogue in a constructive spirit. It was important, she said in a statement, that Moldovan authorities guarantee full respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights, including the rights of peaceful assembly, access to information and expression. On Saturday 11 April, High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana held a telephone conversation with the Moldovan President (and head of the Communist Party) Vladilmir Voronin, during which he stressed the importance of finding a peaceful, political solution to the crisis.
