19/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has published new data on tuberculosis in the EU. This latest data shows that considerable progress has been made toward preventing and keeping this disease in check. The number of cases newly diagnosed has decreased continuously over the last decade, and the rate of notification in 2007 was 12% below that of 2003. In 2007, however, 84,917 new cases were registered and several problems are hampering progress towards eradication of the disease. The most serious problem is linked to the frequency of multi-resistant strains (up to 21% of the cases of tuberculosis in some member states).
