Europe not asking to take detainees

Brussels, 16/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - Europe is not prepared to take the initiative on taking former Guantanamo detainees, European Commission Jacques Barrot said on Friday 13 March. The final decision will depend on the responses Washington gives to a raft of specific questions, he said in an interview with AFP. “We are not prepared to take the initiative. We feel the American authorities themselves will realise this, he said, adding, “There is a kind of deep suspicion on the part of EU interior ministers, who can see problems in taking in former detainees. We really need to know who the possibilities are, for resettlement in Europe”. Among the issues that will be raised with Americans is the camp at Bagram in Afghanistan. “One of our reasons for helping to close Guantanamo would be to prevent the same errors being repeated,” Barrot said. He and Czech Interior Minister Ivan Langer are expected in Washington on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 March for discussions with representatives of the new US administration. (B.C./transl.rt)
