Brussels, 11/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - The genetically modified oilseed rape T45 by Bayer CropScience will be authorised in the EU for import, processing, human and animal feed. This was decided by the European Commission on Tuesday 10 March on the basis of a favourable scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In a press release, the Commission underlines that this authorisation is “important as it will allow the resumption of imports of oilseed rape in the EU from Canada”. Oilseed rape T45 has undergone genetic engineering to make it resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides. As EU member states failed to attain the qualified majority required for approving or rejecting the authorisation, the Commission was entitled to take its own decision. (A.N./transl.jl)
