Half tonne of municipal waste for every person in EU in 2007

Brussels, 09/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - In the EU27, 522 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2007. Municipal waste, collected by or on behalf of municipal authorities, is made up mainly of household, small business, and office waste and can be treated in several ways. In the EU27 in 2007, 42% of treated municipal waste was landfilled, 20% incinerated, 22% recycled and 17% composted, says a Eurostat press release issued on Monday 9 March.
