Olli Rehn does not rule out standing for EU High Representative post

Brussels, 13/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn would not only like to be part of the next Commission, he has not ruled out an interest in the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, provided for in the Lisbon Treaty. “If there is strong support from Finland, I could consider a candidacy for the Position of High Representative. But it's premature to discuss this now,” Rehn said recently in Finland. It would appear that he already has the support of Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, who, like Rehn, belongs to the Centre (Liberal) party. Rehn could be the candidate of the European Liberal Democrat and Reformist Party (ELDR) for the post, but no decision has yet been taken on this. “Mr Rehn would certainly be a very fine candidate, especially after his excellent work as the enlargement commissioner,” ELDR President Annemie Neyts told EUROPE on 13 February. European Liberals have been calling for the various European posts to be shared fairly among the main European political families. It would “not be acceptable”, said Neyts, for the ELDR, Europe's third political force to be ignored. (H.B./transl.rt)
