04/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - “A motion of no confidence on Mr McCreevy is impossible. There would have to be a motion against the whole Commission,” said Martin Schulz, leader of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, speaking on Tuesday 3 February on the sidelines of the plenary session in Strasbourg. He was responding to a question from a journalist asking him about the passiveness of the European internal market commissioner who is accused by the Socialists of hindering their attempts to tighten European legislation on financial services. McCreevy said last week that the Commission, following the public consultation exercise being carried out at the moment, would present binding legislative initiatives on hedge funds and private equity funds (see EUROPE 9827). The European Treaty does not allow the EP to express no confidence in individual members of the Commission, only on all the College of Commissioners. (M.B./transl.rt)
