Brussels, 19/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs has welcomed the creation on Friday 19 December 2008 of a European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). The 42 European Transmission System Operators responsible for running the highest voltage interconnected grid signed an agreement to establish this ENTSO-E which could become the TSO organisation foreseen in the EU's 3rd internal market package. Under the package (which has not yet been adopted), ENTSO-E would have the following tasks: planning the EU electricity transport grid, studying whether production and network infrastructure are up to the mark, even in bad weather conditions, planning common grid management instruments, coordinating transport R&D and drawing up network codes in close cooperation with the Agency for Cooperation of the Energy Regulators (which also has to be created).
