European memories association set up

Brussels, 16/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 9 December, the Fondation universitaire in Brussels, set up the European Memories association. The founders of this association are aware of the essential role memories of history play in the construction of human society and are therefore seeking to help develop citizens to better understand the values, goals and processes in European construction. To this end, they will over the next few weeks be launching a “European Memories in the Making” series at the “Presses Interuniversitaires Européennes/Peter Lang” publishers, which will begin with depictions of figures recalling the events and history of the institutions and association that have played a specific role in building European community. The first two books will focus on Hendrik Brugmans, the first rector at the College of Europe in Bruges, and Emile Noël, the legendary secretary general of the Commission. Chaired by Gabriel Fragnière, former rector at the College of Europe, who will be supported by the former commissioner, Frans Andriessen, the European Memories association can count former senior level European officials among its members such as Jacqueline Lastenouse, Jacques-René Rabier, Franz Froschmaier, Paul Collowald and Giuseppe Ciavarini Azzi, as a number of academics. The European Memories association is open to anyone interested in this theme (Information: memoiredeurope@gmail.com). (M.T./transl.rh)
