Brussels, 05/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - Manifestations of racism in Europe continue to be on the rise throughout the European Union despite some progress mainly in education and the media, states a report published on Tuesday 2 December by the European Network Against Racism (ENAR). “It is necessary to continue to focus action on racism and to promote equal treatment between EU citizens and third country nationals. We call on EU political decision-makers to adopt a European approach of collaboration to deal with the scourge of racism”, Mohammed Aziz, ENAR President, states in a press release. The upsurge in racist violence and extremism are among the most worrying conclusions of the report, as well as the rise in racist political speeches and the formation of far right semi-military groups in Eastern Europe. The report also sheds light on manifestations of racism and xenophobia towards EU citizens, mainly in Bulgaria and Romania, in the context of intra-Community migration from new member states.
