04/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - The commissioner for human rights at the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarberg, published on 20 November a memorandum on the mechanisms for human rights protection, prisons, juvenile justice, immigration and asylum, travellers and Roma in France. The report notes a number of inadequacies in human rights protection. “It is striking to note that most of the measures adopted or proposed in recent months by the French government in the areas of justice and immigration - safety detention, lowering of the age of penal majority, setting targets for taking migrants back to borders - totally contradict what is recommended by the human rights commissioner”, deplored Roselyne Lefançois (PES, France).
