MEPs express concern about large number of fundamental rights violations

Brussels, 04/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - Members of the European Parliament civil liberties committee adopted, on Tuesday 2 December, by 29 votes to 7 and 7 abstentions, the own-initiative report by Giusto Catania (GUE/NGL, Italy) in which they express their concern about the “high number of fundamental rights violations” in the EU. “Too often, legislation in European member states contributes to breaches of fundamental rights rather than to their protection”, Mr Catania deplores in a press release. His report places emphasis on the immoderation of counter-terrorism, cases of discrimination towards the Roma and homosexual couples, as well as threats on the private life of citizens. It also calls on the institutions to set “realist” migration policies in place to cover immigration and also to show proof of greater flexibility towards asylum seekers. An earlier report on the fundamental rights situation in the Union had been rejected in plenary in 2004. The new report will be voted on during the plenary session from 15-18 December in Strasbourg.
