New multilingual website on twinning

Brussels, 28/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - On 13 November, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) is to launch its new multilingual website on twinning. The site will allow local authorities in Europe to find new twinning partners. It will be available in over 20 languages including Ukrainian, Icelandic, Latvian and Greek. It will comprise an online formula offering municipalities the possibility of advertising the fact that they are seeking a partner for twinning. These adverts will be instantaneously available in all languages, CEMR states in a press release.

The website will include “information on twinning” (definition, purpose and financial support) as well as a heading with advice for making a success of twinning, with topical information on twinning and examples of successful twinning.

The CEMR points out that the launch of its new website will also provide an opportunity for discussion on the future of twinning in Europe. Does twinning still serve a purpose in this age of internet, satellite TV and low cost travel? What does it bring in concrete terms to local authorities and the inhabitants of the areas concerned? Jeremy Smith, CEMR General Secretary, and Sandra Ceciarini, responsible for citizenship at the CEMR would be pleased to discuss the topic.
